Something quietly changed in how people shop in our region — and most brands haven't noticed yet.

Walk through what a young professional in Mumbai, Dubai or Riyadh does before buying today. They don't open ten tabs and compare. They open ChatGPT or Gemini and ask, in their own words:

  • "₹700 ke andar dull skin ke liye kaunsa vitamin C serum lena sahi rahega?"
  • "توصيل ورد نفس اليوم بدبي لمناسبة الليلة"
  • "best thobe fabric that stays crisp through a Riyadh summer workday"

The AI answers with 4–5 specific brands. The shopper picks one. The entire "research phase" — where brands used to fight for attention with ads, SEO and influencers — collapsed into a single AI answer.

Why this matters more here than in the US

Three reasons our region is ground zero for this shift:

1. Mobile-first shoppers adopt AI assistants faster. India is one of ChatGPT's largest user bases globally, and Gemini ships built into every Android phone — which is most phones in India. In the Gulf, AI adoption among young shoppers is among the highest in the world.

2. Our languages are invisible to US tools. Shoppers here ask in Hinglish and Arabic. The AI's answers in those languages come from different sources than English answers — meaning a brand can rank well in English tests and be completely absent when a real customer asks in Hinglish.

3. Our marketplaces are different. In the US it's Amazon. Here it's Flipkart, Meesho and Nykaa in India; Noon and Amazon.ae in the UAE; Amazon.sa, Jarir and Nice One in Saudi. When AI recommends and routes buyers, these are the names taking the checkout — and the commission.

The three questions every brand owner should answer this month

1. Does AI recommend you? Ask the way your customers ask — in their language, with their budgets. Or check free in 2 minutes.

2. Where does AI send your buyers? If the answer is "Flipkart" or "Noon," you're paying commission on sales AI won for you.

3. Can AI read your website? If your product names, prices and stock aren't machine-readable, AI apps can't recommend or sell them — no matter how good your products are. Check your site free.

The window is open — briefly

Here's the honest opportunity: almost nobody in our region is working on AI visibility yet. The brands showing up in AI answers today are there mostly by accident — good reviews on the right sites, readable pages, luck.

That means a brand that works on this deliberately — even a small one — can outrank giants in AI answers within months. That window closes as the big players wake up. In the US, they already have.
